Students Lead Inclusive Language Training for War-Related Disabilities<\/h2>\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

Under the supervision of Ms. Maram Daboub from the English Department at Bethlehem University, students in the Second Language Acquisition course connected theory to real-life practice and learned how careful language use can promote empathy and social responsibility, particularly in sensitive contexts involving war-related disabilities.<\/p>\n

Supported by the Academic Innovation Hub (AIH) and the Institute for Community Partnership (ICP), this initiative is part of a broader service-learning program on war-related disabilities, which integrates three projects led by Ms. Sabah Ikhmayyes, Mr. Ramzi Asali, and Ms. Maram Daboub.<\/p>\n

As part of the coursework, students organized a pilot training titled: \u201cWords Shape Worlds: A Capacity-Building Training on Ethical and Inclusive Language for Individuals with War-Related Disabilities.\u201d<\/p>\n

The training was designed for NGO staff and, at the same time, created a valuable learning experience for students. They learned by doing, and developed pragmatic skills by choosing appropriate language for different audiences and contexts.<\/p>\n

They managed all preparations in collaboration with representatives from ten partner organizations: EducAid, UNFPA, SOS, Caritas Baby Hospital Bethlehem, Jemima, Al-Shurooq School for the Blind, Noor Rehabilitation Centre, Yes Theatre, Psychology Spa, and Atfaluna Society for Deaf Children.<\/p>\n

The training featured speakers including Mr. Samir Al-Darabi\u2019 (UNFPA), Ms. Fidaa Shurrab (Atfaluna Society for Deaf Children, Gaza), and Ms. Jumana Kaplanian (Psychology Spa), who addressed inclusive language, lived experiences of disability after war, ethical language use, and the psychological effects.<\/p>\n

At the end of the training, the Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Ms. Hanadi Younan, distributed certificates of participation to attendees, recognizing their engagement and commitment. The training was very well received, with participants and students sharing positive reflections and highlighting the power of language in building more inclusive communities.<\/p>\n
