Ibrahim looks forward to his second year in Hotel Management at Bethlehem University that started in early September. He lives with his dad and young sister in one of the six Refugee Camps near Bethlehem University. Sadly, his mom is deceased.
As a refugee, his family’s story goes back to 1948 in Beit Jibreen, where his grandfather was pushed out of his home. His family has been living in a refugee camp ever since. They are a strong family and seek work whenever and wherever possible. But the ever-present raids, with their uncertainty and fear, have led to their house being filled multiple times with gas that has then been ignited by grenades.
Even though Ibrahim’s dad is employed, his pay is only 2500 shekels ($670 USD) that barely covers their living expenses. With a younger sister in kindergarten, his Bethlehem University scholarship gives the family, “one less problem to worry about.”
After graduation, Ibrahim is “hoping God permits him to open a high-class restaurant” but if that does not work out “he will work at restaurants or managing a hotel.” He recognizes that Bethlehem University is helping him gain the skills and knowledge needed to manage a hotel or restaurant and run a business.
He is grateful to BUFUSA’s many donors for their help in supporting his education and that, “there are many students who have the same situation as me or worse. Thank you for caring and trying to help, we really appreciate it.”
Migrants and refugees are not pawns on the chessboard of humanity
For student refugees, military patrols, tear gas, intimidation, unpredictable road closures, limited access to daily necessities and grave uncertainty are part of everyday life. One hundred and thirty-three (4%) of Bethlehem University students live in refugee camps in Bethlehem, Hebron, Jerusalem, or Ramallah/Al-Bireh. There are no other places for these students and their families to go. Their hope lies in a quality education with the prospects of a good job that helps to lift their families from poverty. Your continued support is vital to this special student population who receive assistance to attend Bethlehem University.
The Holy Land must be a place of peace and hope for all people. Your continued support of Bethlehem University Foundation is one of the best possible ways to achieve lasting peace. The urgency of our students’ needs are paramount. Please don’t hesitate to share another gift of hope – today, so more students can achieve their dreams.
