Bethlehem University Astronomy Club Represents Palestine Under Spanish Skies<\/h2>\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

From July 20-25, under the night skies of Tenerife in Spain’s Canary Islands, a delegation of five from Bethlehem University’s Astronomy Club found themselves sharing with the world, through Spanish and international media, what it means to study science in Palestine.<\/p>\n

The delegation of two lecturers and three students joined 76 participants from around the world at the 11th International Astronomy Education Adventure (AEACI 2026), hosted by the Instituto de Astrof\u00edsica de Canarias (IAC) and co-funded by the European Union. Their week included robotic telescope research and visits to the Canary Islands Observatories, some of the best stargazing sites in the world.<\/p>\n

Bethlehem University\u2019s Astronomy students made themselves heard in an international scientific space, and their voice reached even further when local press took notice. Dr. Michel Hanania and student Mereal Lolas sat for an interview about the state of science education in Palestine, the obstacles students face, and the role of astronomy in providing them with hope.<\/p>\n

“For us, this is proving to be a unique and unforgettable experience,” said Ahmad Atiyha, President of the Astronomy Club. “We are discovering a world of possibilities that will enrich our activities, and we hope this marks the start of a fruitful collaboration between (Bethlehem University) and the IAC.”<\/p>\n

For an astronomy club at a university in the West Bank, it was a rare kind of global visibility: a chance, despite the difficulties, to be known for the science they\u2019re doing.<\/p>\n

Bethlehem University’s delegation to AEACI 2026 was sponsored by the CajaCanarias Foundation and included Ahmad Atiyha, President of the Astronomy Club; Dr. Michel\u00a0Hanania, the Club’s Director; and students and graduates Mereal Lolas, Lamis Wazwaz, and Ayham Atiyha.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n
