Dynamic, Real-World Learning Experiences<\/h2>\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

Reflecting Bethlehem University\u2019s deep commitment to offering dynamic, real-world learning experiences, students from the Creative Communications and Campaigns course, taught by Mr. Layth R. Awwad, had the unique opportunity to engage with renowned Palestinian-American comedian, actress, author, and disability advocate Maysoon Zayid on April 25, 2025.<\/p>\n

Ms. Zayid, celebrated internationally for her groundbreaking TED Talk \u201cI Got 99 Problems . . . Palsy Is Just One,\u201d as well as her roles as a Princeton Arts Fellow, NYU Abu Dhabi faculty member, and published graphic novelist (Shiny Misfits), visited the class to share her invaluable insights on creativity, communication, and activism. Born in New Jersey to Palestinian immigrant parents, Ms. Zayid has dedicated her career to challenging stereotypes, promoting inclusion, and amplifying marginalized voices.<\/p>\n

During the session, students presented their elevator pitches for fictional products, receiving direct and practical feedback from Ms. Zayid. She emphasized the importance of repetition in messaging and encouraged students to \u201cembrace your past to create a stronger future,\u201d underscoring the role of authenticity in building effective communication campaigns.<\/p>\n

Ms. Zayid also introduced her project DISCO (Disability in Society, Culture, and Opportunity), a live interactive panel show. Notably, one of Bethlehem University\u2019s own, English Department graduate Amal Abo Srour, recently joined DISCO, continuing the proud tradition of Bethlehem University students contributing to creative and social advocacy initiatives on an international level.<\/p>\n

This guest lecture follows an earlier session in Mr. Awwad\u2019s class titled Digital Influencing featuring Irene Kruizinga, a representative from Oxfam, who was also connected through the efforts of Ms. Paola Handal. Ms. Kruizinga discussed humanitarian communications, global advocacy campaigns, and the ethics of storytelling in development work. Through these diverse guest lectures, Mr. Awwad ensures that students are exposed to a wide range of communication fields\u2014from corporate branding to nonprofit advocacy\u2014helping them build a versatile and socially conscious skill set.<\/p>\n
