Occupational Therapy Students Experience Real-World Application of Skills

Occupational Therapy Students Work at Les Amis des Enfants de Bethlehem

Bethlehem University’s third-year Occupational Therapy students participated in a two-day practical learning experience at Les Amis des Enfants de Bethlehem (Bethlehem Children’s Friends Association) on April 8–9, 2025. The visit was organized as part of the “Community-Based Rehabilitation” course that aims to deepen students’ understanding of psychomotor development through real-world application.

The students were warmly welcomed by Ms. Nahida Ghattas, a representative of the association, who introduced the organization’s mission and vision. The visit emphasized the critical role Les Amis des Enfants de Bethlehem plays in supporting children’s development and well-being in the community.

Ms. Myriam Abu Laban, General Director of the association, delivered an in-depth presentation on the principles and practices of psychomotor development. She outlined the structured approach the association uses to support children’s physical, cognitive, and emotional growth through intentional, movement-based interventions.

Students then had the opportunity to participate in hands-on psychomotor development sessions, actively engaging in activities designed to simulate the phases of a therapeutic intervention: introduction, activity, and closure. These experiences allowed students to deepen their understanding of how psychomotor therapy is implemented in real-life contexts and its relevance to occupational therapy.

The visit concluded with a reflective group discussion, where students analyzed their observations and linked them to academic theories and therapeutic frameworks. The session promoted critical thinking and reinforced the value of community-based, client-centered care in occupational therapy.

This initiative reflects Bethlehem University’s strong commitment to experiential learning, academic excellence, and community service. By engaging with institutions like Les Amis des Enfants de Bethlehem, the university prepares students not only as skilled professionals but also as compassionate leaders equipped to make a meaningful impact in Palestine’s healthcare and rehabilitation sectors.
