Greetings from Brother Hernán Santos, Vice Chancellor of BU

A January Message

Dear Friends,

I thought of you, our supporters, and about Bethlehem University when I and other Catholic university leaders heard Pope Francis say, “human beings have values and these need to be respected. This is perhaps the finest and greatest thing about your universities” while attending “The University and The Church” conference earlier this month.  It is because of you and your generous support that our faculty and staff at Bethlehem University are able to bring this maxim alive for our students each and every day – even in the midst of these tense and violent times here in our region.

Friends, I thank you from the bottom of my heart for your support of the sacred educational mission of Bethlehem University.  While the current situation in the Holy Land is very challenging, I assure you that the faculty and staff of Bethlehem University continue to provide an exceptional values-based holistic learning experience for the students entrusted to our care.

Below are just a few examples of events that have happened these past months:

  1. Erasmus+ Virtual ExchangeIn November and December of 2023, some 320 Bethlehem University students virtually engaged with other students from Europe and the Southern Mediterranean in a European Union sponsored four-week program. The program focused on building students’ digital literacy, teamwork skills, critical thinking, and intercultural understanding through facilitated discussions. Students received micro-credentials for their participation.
  2. Digital Communication Course addressing Social Issues: BU launched its first ever digital and communications course this past fall. Teams of students designed and launched websites and social media platforms to heighten social awareness of a variety of harmful social issues. See student projects here.

In light of the current situation, I am delighted to announce James Howell and Brother Jack Curran, FSC, PhD, KHS as our key leaders. In October 2023, the Bethlehem University Foundation Board of Directors appointed James Howell as Executive Director, and this January we welcomed Brother Jack back to Bethlehem University as our Vice President for Advancement. Together they will forge a common vision through strategic initatives to fortify and unify our philanthropic endeavors for our students, faculty, and staff.

As we navigate through these heartbreaking times, your continued support is crucial to ensuring that Bethlehem University has the financial resources to serve the Bethlehem and Palestinian communities. As I meet and nurture new relationships and friendships, I am overcome with the generosity and spirit of BU. Your dedication to our cause means more than words can say. You are truly changing lives.

In your moments of prayer, I invite you to join me in seeking divine protection and guidance for Bethlehem University. May the Lord bless our students, faculty, staff, and their families, as well as all of our friends and benefactors around the world who generously sustain this sacred institution.

Blessings and peace,

Brother Hernán Santos, FSC, PhD

Vice Chancellor of Bethlehem University
