She graduated first in her class and right now, she’s working by flashlight at a field hospital in Mawasi, Khan Yunis. Between shifts caring for wounded patients, she’s studying for her Master’s degree in Oncology and Palliative Care at Bethlehem University.
When the internet works, she joins virtual classes. When it doesn’t, she reads medical journals by whatever light she can find.
She wrote about why she’s doing this:
“Dealing with cancer patients makes me more empathetic and keen to
provide comprehensive care that focuses on the patient and not just the disease.
Attention to the psychological and spiritual aspect is equivalent to physical treatment.”
Ilham is working in the rubble of a destroyed healthcare system, and she’s still thinking about how to care for the whole person—body, mind, and spirit.
